Warm greetings from AlamKulKul Boutique Resort.

It is always a great pleasure to present the latest edition of the KulKul Beat. This online newsletter has been designed especially to keep our valued guests and travel associates informed about all the latest news and special promotions from our boutique resort on the shores of Kuta’s famed sunset beach.

As we embrace the beginning of yet another year, we look forward to welcoming more visitors than ever before to the island. Despite plenty of regional competition from neighbouring countries, Bali remains a spiritually charged destination that offers warm hospitality and service from the heart. It is the genuine smiles and friendly disposition of the local Balinese people that endears the island to travellers from all walks of life.

On a cultural note there are several Balinese Hindu religious celebrations that will take place during the first quarter of 2009. Saraswati Day on 3rd January is an auspicious occasion that acknowledges the importance of higher learning within society. Students from local schools and institutes of education will dress in traditional finery to participate in ceremonies of communal prayer. Books will be blessed with flower offerings, incense and a sprinkle of holy water as an expression of gratitude to Dewi Saraswati, the Goddess of knowledge.

March will also be an important month with two significant dates on the Hindu religious calendar occurring within days of each other. Galungan on 18th March is the local equivalent to Christmas in western society. The Balinese will return home to their ancestral villages to pray, feast and reunite with extended family members during a three day period of ceremonial activity.

The celebrations of Galungan are closely followed by Nyepi or the Balinese New Year on 26th March. This occasion is also referred to as the ‘Day of Silence’ as the entire island literally shuts down for a 24 hour period. It is believed that if there is no sign of activity during this time then all the negative spirits of the underworlds will pass by and reap havoc somewhere else. The sheer magnitude of temporarily ‘closing down’ an island of Bali’s size is truly an amazing feat. Out of respect for this unique tradition, all visitors are asked to remain within their confines of their hotel. Followers of the Hindu faith will use this opportunity to stay at home as a time of prayer and personal reflection.

I do hope that readers will choose to visit us at AlamKulKul Boutique Resort in the near future to experience all that the enchanting island of Bali has to offer.
